Background information for Subaru of American and brief descriptions of its newest all-wheel drive cars.
Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd., one of Japan's largest manufacturers of transportation equipment, has been building Subaru cars since 1958. In 1972, their Subaru division was the first to offer four-wheel drive passenger cars in the world. Today, Subaru has sold more than ten million cars worldwide and the company is steadily improving and broadening their lineup of cars. Their four-wheel drive tradition continues with cars that offer it as a standard feature. Subaru's lineup ranges from the practical and economical Impreza, the performance WRX sport sedan, the Legacy mid-size sedan, and their first sport utility, the B9 Tribeca.
Impreza:
The Impreza is Subaru's most versatile model offered in either a sedan or sport wagon. They are the only vehicles in their respective classes to offer standard full-time all-wheel drive. All cars come with performance-oriented engines, the RS has a tamed 2.5-liter 'boxer' 4-cylinder that cranks out 165-horsepower. The WRX line has a turbocharged, 2.0-liter engine with 227-horsepower. The ultimate Impreza hot-rod is the WRX STI with its turbocharged, 2.5-liter, rally-inspired engine that delivers 300-horspower to all four tires. Styling is conservative in both sedan and wagon forms, even the high-performance STI has only modest styling enhancements aside from its large wing. Interior appointments are modest with a generous amount of standard features. The STI, the most expensive of the group, has a plain-looking interior to maximize its power-to-weight ratio.
Legacy:
In the mid-size sedan and wagon category, the Legacy continues to be the only model in its class to offer all-wheel drive. All new for 2005, the Legacy arrives with a more refined, aerodynamically styled exterior, more luxury interior appointments, and a more powerful engine for the higher-priced, GT versions. The standard engine is Subaru's 2.5-liter 'boxer' engine generating 168-horsepower, capable of modest acceleration and good fuel economy. GT versions get a turbocharged version that makes 250-horsepower resulting in a more enhanced driving experience. Like with all new car models, the Legacy is bigger and has more passenger room. Cargo volume has also increased to over 11-cu/ft in the sedan and over 32-cu/ft in the wagon.
B9 Tribeca:
Fresh into the SUV race is Subaru's all-new, 7-passenger B9 Tribeca based on the Outback's platform. Its styling is a departure from other Subaru models and offers a unique twist to the countless other sport utilities on the market. The exterior's love it or hate it looks continue in the interior that resembles an airplane cockpit. According to Motortrend.com, front interior space is spacious, the second row is decent, and the third row can fit two adults comfortably. The Tribeca comes with a 3.0-liter V6 engine with 250-horsepower available for its Symmetrical All-wheel drive system. Subaru's entry into the SUV battle is very capable and it does so with a price that is below most of its competitors.
